The brief introduction of potassium octatitanates:

In fact, the potassium octatitanate has two composition, one is K2Ti8O17(or K2O•8TiO2),the other is K3Ti8O17,the latter is not usual.

The crystal structures of potassium octatitanates belong to monoclinic systems, point group is C2/m. In crystal structure of potassium octatitanates, the coordination numbers were 6, the tunnel form structure connected by TiO6 octahedron altogether angle and edge, K+ ions in the middle of tunnel, axis of tunnel and crystal axis were parallel.

The figure of crystal structure of potassium octatitanates showed that K+ ions enclosed by structures with tunnel form so that they were divided from surroundings, which made K+ ions couldn't break through these tunnel structure and that chemical inertness. The crystal structures of potassium octatitanates and potassium hexatitanates were similar, both to be tunnel form, but potassium octatitanates was distinguished potassium hexatitanates,the difference as follows:

1. The chemical properties of potassium octatitanates were more stable than the chemical properties of potassium hexatitanates.

2. Physical properties

The chemical properties of potassium octatitanates and potassium hexatitanates were near, the specific gravity of potassium octatitanates were heavier than the specific gravity of potassium hexatitanates, the melting point was high, about 1400℃, which could adjust to needs of higher range of temperature in reinforcing materials. Such as in ceramic materials, the potassium octatitanates could be used for ceramic-reinforced materials and also be used for ceramic painting materials and so on. the heat shidleing performance of potassium octatitanates were poorer than the heat shidleing performance of potassium hexatitanates, under low temperature(≥1000℃), the use of potassium hexatitanates was more.
